Shaun

(from Newsflesh Trilogy by Mira Grant)

I don’t read books about zombies, but with characters like Shaun and Georgia I would read anything and I bet I’d still love it no matter what. Seriously, I fell in love with Shaun from the first chapter in the first book and I was so happy to have him all for myself in Deadline.

Such a wonderful (and a bit crazy) character!

“Our story opens where countless stories have ended
in the last 26 years: with an idiot, in this case my
brother Shaun, deciding it would be a good idea to go out
and poke a zombie with a stick to see what happens.”

What do we know about him?

Pros:

#1: He has a very strange hobby, but at least he is good at it:

“Both of us are smart enough to know where our strength lie. His involve poking dead things with sticks and living to blog about it.”
#2: He is funny, sarcastic and sweet:
“Here’s how it used to work: George told you the unvarnished facts, no matter how nasty they were or how lousy they made you feel and I came in to dance like a monkey and make you feel better about the shitty world we’re living in.”
#3: He is sincere:
“You look like hell.
You can tell that with the light off?”
#4: He is such a good storyteller:
“I just find it interesting that kids apparently used to cry when Bambi’s mother died. George and I both held our breaths, and then cheered when she didn’t reanimate and try to eat her son.”
#5: His emotions are raw, and he makes you care so much for him that it hurts:
“Everything was perfect. Those are the worst dreams of all, because in the end, I can’t stay asleep forever.”
#6: He is too cute for words. You don’t believe me? Hear this:
“Rick stared at him. ‘Your brother is an alien.’
‘Yeah, but he’s a cute one’.[Georgia] ”
#7 Is there anything else to say?
“Everything else is just details. And those don’t really matter to me anymore.”

Cons:

#1: He’s a bit crazy, even if his craziness is quite adorable:

“ I feel the closest to crazy when I’m disagreeing with the voice in my head”
#2: He has a bit of a temper..a whole bit:
“He stopped after I finally lost my temper and introduced my fist to his face, resulting in skinned knuckles on my part and a broken nose on his.”
So, why Drew Roy?

  • Did you see the picture with the gun?
  • Did you see the picture with the bike?
  • Isn’t he cute?

Well, that’s why!

Happy midnight dreams, girls!

*drools* you just made me the giddiest fan-girl ever just by mentioning Shaun Mason! seriously, I was more concerned about him than anyone else in those books (which is funny, considering his Irwin-esque behavior in the first book). But, now you’ve gone and made him Hal from Falling Skies? Have I mentioned how much I love YOU for that stroke of genius?! Drew Roy is perfect for Shaun!

    Here’s PiF’s.

*edit* ha! and going on to imdb to look at more pretty pics of Drew Roy, I just realized Hal’s last name is Mason, too. Like I said: perfect.

    • Ari says:

Ha haa, I didn’t realize Hal was another Mason – well, now I am really sure he is perfect for Shaun :))
I am really glad you like my ‘boyfriend’.. Shaun was my favorite character from this series as well, and I worried as hell for him through the books – after the first few pages I was so sure he was going to die and I cared too much about him to let him go.

      • Kira Burgoyne says:

ha! yeah, that was my issue, too. don’t know what it is about him, he’s just that lovable.

        • Ari says:

I just wanted to tell you that I watched Falling Skies. I loved the first 3 seasons (Hal included) but damn, they messed with the story so badly in the 4th season. I can’t even stomach to watch it anymore *sigh* it’s such a shame. i don’t think i’ll even see the last season.

Drew Roy is sooooo freaking cute!

You know, a lot of people have voices in their heads, so I can’t really hold that against Shaun. Those voices are probably why he’s such a good story teller. LOL

Love the way you set up your post with the pros and cons. I might have to steal that idea….

    • Ari says:

I liked his craziness as well, maybe I wouldn’t like him as much without seeing him argue with himself ;)) he is so cute.

  3. Smitten Kitten says:

Drew Roy is a great choice for Shaun. I just read Feed, hopefully I will get to Deadline soon.

    • Ari says:

For me, Deadline was better. I really loved it and I hope you will enjoy it as well. Shaun is great and funny and his discoveries are sometimes mind-blowing. And all the other characters are amazing as well.

  4. Ariel @ Must Love Books says:

I had never heard of Drew Roy before, but he is adorable! I really like the smiling one. Is it just me or does he look like a mix between Josh Hutcherson and Cory Monteith?

I haven’t read this book, but I love the quotes you picked! I’m going to have to put this on my want list.

    • Ari says:

I didn’t know him either. I just found him while looking for pictures with guys who resembled Shaun (or the Shaun from my mind).
I have this obsession, I try more to find a guy that looks like the character and not only a sexy one (even though some of them are sexy as well), I feel the need to bring the character to life somehow ;))

And you should check this book, I great even for people that doesn’t usually read books about zombies (me included)

    • Ari says:

I like the picture with him laughing to himself. To me it’s like it shows a bit of his craziness (all in a good way) 😀

  7. Yes I saw the picture with the gun and the bike, and I think he is just plain old sexy!! hehe. I love your choice for this week and your layout for the stats 🙂 Very unique and easy to follow! I definitely laughed out loud on Quote # 5! hahah.

    • Ari says:

Thanks. I it wrong that I like my idea with the layout as well? :))
I’m glad you like it, and I tried to find pictures with him that really define the character. (not sure about the one with glasses, but I hope that he looks like he is charming, because Shaun is charming joking around and winning our hearts doing so)

  9. This book sounds so fun! That quote about poking zombies with sticks made me laugh. I haven’t read a zombie book yet, this might be the one to start with. He’s cute!

  10. Jesse Burgoyne says:

I never thought about who would be a good Shaun, but Drew Roy is perfect! Now I want to go read the 2nd Newsflesh book just so I can picture him as Shaun.
