Alienated

Alienated

by Melissa Landers

SYNOPSIS:

Interplanetary relations have never been more exciting! The first in a funny, romantic YA sci-fi series.
Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.
But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L’eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

From time to time I fall in love with a cover – hard, instantly – and I never recover from it.
You don’t know how much I just love the Alienated cover and how perfect it is for the story!

Correlation by ~asialivThe story:

We’ve all imagine how it would feel like to be found by other alien species. For them to come with their shiny spaceships and wonderful technologies and change our world. We’ve imagined them destroying us (usually), or maybe, if we are in a good mood, we’d try to imagine things the other way around.. but how about cohabiting?

This book is all about humans’ reaction to an alien (in fact 3) living among them.

The Good:

– Imagining aliens looking like us, a better version of us – smarter, better looking, more advanced in all different ways; for some reason I like this concept, I wouldn’t mind it to be true, LOL.
There were many differences between humans and aliens in terms of living, eating, behaviour, history, genetics and so on, and I loved discovering more things about Aelyx and his kind. Also there were quite a few funny moments involving some of those differences and characters’ curiosity to learn more about the others.

– The relationship between Cara and Aelyx. They didn’t want to be paired together, one shadowing the other one, and the start of their relationship is quite rocky. But step by step they are learning to trust each other, to be intrigued by the other’s history and customs and through all the messy journey they fall in love (and it’s all so cute and funny, you can’t believe it).
There was this teasing and a bit of fighting and trying to see who was the smart ass of the two of them, all in the best funny way of course, and I found myself laughing out-loud so many times. Also the chemistry between them shouldn’t be left out of this review, as it was present at all times.

Aelyx– The comparison with what happened not so long again in terms of racism.. and what probably still happens here and there around the world (don’t pretend that’s not true, ’cause closing your eyes won’t change anything). I found all that disturbing in a realistic kind of way. It’s true, in every scenario I could have in my mind there would be people adoringly stalking the poor aliens and people throwing pebbles at them. There would be horrible media manipulation and there would be casualties. Also there would be hidden reasons behind the possible alliance between the 2 species and lots of people being hurt when this would get messy.

– The supporting family – you don’t see this much in YA books and I really appreciate it. Maybe parents are not always the best (as the difference in age and thinking is not something that one can ignore), but I like to think that someday I will have a kid that won’t think about me what YA characters think about their mother. And this family sounds like a nice one to have (except for the brother that is mostly a clueless lunatic, or so I thought of him).

The not so good:

cara– Cara’s decision and show

. Wouldn’t want to spoil what’s that about but it didn’t ring right in my mind.

– Friendship and respect – or the lack of those. It’s not that I have mixed feelings about her best friend and ex-boyfriend, is that I didn’t like them at all and I didn’t understand their motives when it came to any of their actions (good or bad)

– Love – Yes, Cara and Aelyx took their time to know each other, so there was no actual insta-love involved, but when the word ‘love’ came to light it still made me cringe a bit: they knew each other, enjoyed each other’s company, but still they barely got to kiss like once.. that’s not love. And after that, all their decisions didn’t ring right because they were based on that love.

Conclusion:

This is the beginning of what I hope to be a great series. I like the characters and the settling and I won’t even bother you with my love for the cover (God I can’t wait to have a copy in my hands!) and I am really eager to find out more about L’eihr (the alien planet) now that Cara is headed there.

PS: when I started reading this book I would have loved to have a L’eihr dictionary as well, as some ‘alien’ words were quite a mystery to me (or maybe it was supposed to be this way).

Happy midnight reading!

I’ve wanted to read Alienated since the cover first came out but I’m a little hesitant now. I’m a little disappointed that even though the characters grow to like each other, they use the word “love” after one kiss. It happens in so many books but it’s very annoying! I’m glad to see that despite that you still enjoyed the book. I’m probably going to give this one a chance because the world-building sounds amazing but the characters don’t sound as original. Great review! 🙂

I don’t think you should worry that much.
They’ve spent a lot of time talking and teasing and getting close (flirting some more) before all that happened, and maybe for some people it won’t seem that ‘love’ was thrown in the middle as quick as it seemed to me. So you might enjoy it just as much 😉

This book sounds amazing! I haven’t read any review about it until now, and I love how it sounds. Plus, the cover and the images are great!
    Love your review!

PS: I see you’re reading World after… I can’t wait to know what you think!

Thanks, hun, I am not even sure how I found out about it, but I am so glad I did! It was love at first sight, I tell you 🙂 I hate the fact that it comes out in February because I want a copy of this beauty on my shelf right now!

As for World AFter, it’s great, I’ll have my review up closer to the release date and I just preordered my copy from fishpond – you can tell by this that I liked it, right? ;))

I preorder World after fo my kindle, and now that I know you liked it I am even more excited! Sadly, I don’t like the cover, that’s why I didn’t oder the paperback (I’m that silly sometimes! lol). I can’t wait to read you review!

Well, I do love it to pieces.. the cover, that is.. the colouring, the wings – so perfect for the story. I read the first one in ebook format (it wasn’t available in paper format back then) and now I ordered them both ;)) Can’t wait to have them.
Now, of course, a cover like the one for Alienated is beautiful in a totally different kind of way and it might appeal maybe more. Still, I love it just as much and I think it is just as expressive in its way.
