Etienne Saint Claire

(from Anna and the French kiss by Stephanie Perkins)

He’s so beautiful, so perfect. I’m dizzy. My heart pounds, my pulse races.
I tilt my face toward his, and he answers with an identical slow tilt toward mine.
He closes his eyes. Our lips brush lightly.
“If you ask me to kiss you, I will” he says.
His fingers stroke the inside of my wrists, and I burst into flames.
“Kiss me” I say. He does.

What do we know about Etienne?

He is smart, cute, sexy, and he will remind you of the days when you were young, naive, and in love for the first time.
Pros:
#1: Etienne is an American boy with English accent and French name – somehow one of the best combinations in the world.

“French name, English accent, American school.
Anna confused.”
#2: Even though he is not really tall (not that would be a problem to me since I am pretty short myself) he has lovely dark-brown-messy hair – who doesn’t love that, huh?
“The first thing I notice is his hair – it’s the first thing I notice about anyone. It’s dark brown and messy and somehow both long and short at the same time. I think of the Beatles, since I’ve just seen them in Meredith’s room. It’s artist’s hair. Musician hair. I-pretend-I-don’t-care-but-I-really-do hair.”
#3: He is perfect:
“Closed. Plenty of time to see it later, remember?” He leads me into the courtyard, and I take the opportunity to admire his backside. Callipygian. There is something better than Notre-Dame.”
#4: He wears a funny hat, which probably looks terribly cute on him.
“So the hat is back”, Rashmi says.
“Yup”, he says. “I know you missed it.”
“Is there a story behind The Hat?”I ask.
“Only that his mother made it for him last winter, and we all agreed it was the most hideous accessory in Paris” Rashmi says.
“Oh, yeah?” St. Claire pulls it off and yanks it down over her head. Her two black braids stick out comically from underneath.
“Looks great on you. Really fetching.”
She scowls and tosses it back, then smoothes her part. He shovels it over his messy hair again, and I find myself agreeing with Mer. It’s actually pretty cute. He looks warm and fuzzy, like a teddy bear”
Cons:
#1 He has some cute bad habits 🙂
“I don’t care what he thinks. Only what you think.” He holds me tighter. “Like if you think I need to stop biting my nails.” “You’ve worn your pinkies to nubs,” I say cheerfully.”
#2 He needs to stop being so insecure, because his insecurities are hurting some people (like Anna, and his girlfriend, and his best friend Mer)
“You say that I’m afraid of being alone, and it’s true. I am. And I’m not proud of it. But you need to take a good look at yourself, Anna, because I am NOT the only one in this room who suffers this problem.”

So, why Adam Brody?

  • He is cute with his messy hair.
  • He looks pretty good even with a hat.
  • And Stephanie Perkins likes him too – what do you need more?

    Oh la la.

I think Adam is a very good choice for Etienne. I love the pictures and quotes you’ve picked out! Great post.

  2. I love Etienne so freaking much! And Adam Brody, he’s a great pick for him! Love all those photos you’ve used. I miss seeing Adam regularly now he’s not really doing that much!

I love them both too, (and it’s funny because for me Adam is like a character too, the one from his movies) and they look pretty good in one person – Adam’s cute looks with Etienne’s charm and personality.
Can’t wait to read more about Etienne in the next book 😀

PERFECT choice for your first book boyfriend & I love your version of the name my book boyfriend. I definitely dream about these boys haha I didn’t imagine St. Clair like this buuuuut I think Adam Brody fits! especially personality wise because they’re both silly or well Adam Brody character on The OC haha. I love the pictures you picked, SMOKING HOT and the quotes were perfect. I just CANNOT wait to meet this cricket fellow in Lola and the Boy Next Door only NINE more days!!

    Aren’t these posts the funniest?

    -thank you&come again.

I’m happy you liked my Etienne.
Truth to be told, I didn’t have him in my mind while reading the book, but as you also noted, his role from “The OC” had something Etienne-ish in it, or so I think 🙂
And the pictures seem to fit some descriptions about the character from the book..
AND I like Adam Brody a lot, and that’s also a plus.

Now I’ll have to do some research for my new boyfriend dream (I’m a bit of a book-slut, you know, always falling for another character..LOL)

I think so too!! personality wise they are definitely twins and I could pass them for looks too.

I already had my next book boyfriend down but ehh, I got so busy with school this week as you can see I’m replaying to everything late! LOL you made my day with that, if your a book slut that makes me like a book prostitute and I’m one of those free prostitutes when it comes to books HAHA

This is unhealthy, we will NEVER find a a real man now….

        -thank you&come again.

I had to skip one book-boyfriend too and still don’t know who’s the new lucky guy ;)) I’ll get through my list of favorite books to see who’s charming enough for me to dream about him ;))
