SYNOPSIS:

The fates of Cinder and Scarlet collide as a Lunar threat spreads across the Earth…
Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.
Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

scarlet_and_her_ship_by_blindthistleSo, down the road to Cinder(ella) is the beauty in red – my mistake, Red Riding Hood. No, I mean Scarlet, like the hair (and yeah, dear, I know you’ve heard that before).

And maybe not quite down the road, as between New Beijing and France there might be more than just one road (in fact we might need a shiny spaceship to help us travel light), but what goes around comes around and we need to get back to the very beginning of this all. Confusing much? I am glad to hear that.

Let’s start with something less confusing: SCARLET is just as awesome as CINDER. I meant the books, but the characters are just as great.

We follow again the path of Cinder who tries to survive in that crazy life of hers. Prince Kai might hate her (or maybe he might not), Queen Levana wants her head and now Cinder has a new partner in crime, one pretty much funny – Carswell Thorne (don’t worry he is no love interest, not in this book and not when it comes to Cinder), that I started to care about (he might be my favourite male character in this series). Yes, he is a bit lot silly and full of himself, but the cutest of them all nonetheless. Well, to be honest, there is not a character in this story that doesn’t have a voice of its own, maybe this is why I love it so much.

“I don’t see that her being cyborg is relevant.” [Kai]

“A captain always knows where his ship is. It’s like a psychic bond.” [Thorne]
“If only we had a captain here.” [Cinder]

But then we have 2 new POVs and a new love story to gush over.

This Scarlet girl is though, decided and she won’t take no for an answer. She will fall in love, hard, but she will take her time. She will trust a stranger, she might give her heart away, but she will never forget what she needs to do, who she needs to find, to protect – her granny. And really, there is nothing that could stop her – and at some point I wished there was, because the world is full of dangers – dangers that will make her cross Cinder’s path.. once more. And not only hers.

“She did not know that the wolf was a wicked sort of animal, and she was not afraid of him.”

scarlet-and-wolfAnd now, let’s meet (the) Wolf:
Dark, dangerous and out of place. You don’t know why is he there, why does he care, if to trust him or not with Scarlet’s heart – God help us all, even I fell for him.. just a bit.. Ok, maybe a bit more.
Note that I didn’t read the novella first, and I am glad because I didn’t know who Ze’ev really was and the surprises where quite lovely (it goes both ways – the good and the not-so-nice ones).

Between all these lovely characters and the ones from the first book we get an amazing storyline with great action, a lot of fun and quite a few turnarounds that will leave you begging for more.

I need to give a very big thanks to Marissa for this wonderful story, as it made my ‘sick in bed’ day not only bearable, but quite great considering the situation… You really can’t imagine the immensity of addictiveness that comes with this story… I’d give a cyborg foot to have the next book now, LOL! February could never come soon enough.

‘Till then.. Happy midnight reading!

But, don't let me do all the talking. I want to know what you think of this as well.

    Yeeii, you liked this too!
I think I like the couple from Cinder just a bit better (Kai owns my heart), but Scarlet and Wolf are terrific in their own way. I liked him better after reading the novella though….. Oh and the kiss, the scape kiss, it melted me to the floor. My, my, my!!!

You took those words from my lips ;))
I am so happy not be be the only one gushing about this series – the action is fantastic, the world-building is awesome and those romantic bits leave me feeling all fluffy and fuzzy.

  • Julia

I love retellings and this series is one of the best. Very imaginative and with such lovely characters. Love the review and the pictures (the last one is so tender)

Thank you, Julia. I am happy to see that other people liked it just as much (and the artists from above show their love in such an awesome way!)

  • Lina

I love this series too, but what I want to tell you now is that I LOVE the lights form your header. I want a Christmas tree right now!

    • http://www.readingaftermidnight.com/ Ari

Oh, thanks. I love this time of the year and I am quite fond of my little Christmas tree from up there. Also, it’s great to see that you liked the book too. Can’t wait for both of us to read the 3rd one and talk about it!

  • Lis @ The reader lines

I’m going to read this one next week!!!
I’m so glad you loved it, I’m sure I’ll love it, too! I really want to meet Wolf!

PS: OhmyGod! It’s Christmas on your blog! -again- you have THE BEST blog design ever!!! I love it!!

    • http://www.readingaftermidnight.com/ Ari

Oh, Lis, I hope that you will enjoy it just as much. I read them both together so for me this is just one big story, I can hardly make the difference between the two of them – it is still Cinder’s story, but we get to meet some other awesome characters on the way (and all of them might grow on you with each page). Really – enjoy it! I wish I could read this books again ‘for the first time’.

As for the Christmas tree, I won’t have one this year (will be traveling, there won’t be snow either) so I can at least enjoy it on my blog ;))

      • Lis @ The reader lines

Boo for no-Christmas-tree! I hope you have a great time, though! :)

        • http://www.readingaftermidnight.com/ Ari

I will, as I’ll spend my holidays with some very close friends. I’ll probably miss the tree a bit, but for me Christmas all about being close to my loved ones and having a joyful time together.. And that’s the plan.
